We’re The Racing Wombats, and we’re taking on the Shitbox Rally 2026 Spring to raise money for Cancer Council. The challenge? Driving 3,350 km from Cairns to Darwin in a car worth no more than $1,500. What could possibly go wrong?
Our goal is $50,000, and Blue Tree Financial Planning has proudly kicked things off with the first $5,000.
The team is me and my dad, a lifelong car lover and enthusiast. Cancer has affected both of us through friends and family, and it is also something I see far too often through my work at Blue Tree. We regularly help clients through insurance claims following a cancer diagnosis, and sadly we have also lost a number of clients to the disease over the years.
For me personally, this rally is also in memory of my very dear friend Ben Kikuchi, who passed away from cancer at just 39.
We’re looking forward to a memorable trip, plenty of questionable car moments, and most importantly, raising as much as we can for cancer research.

Shitbox Rally is a 7-day challenge like no other. Participants drive cars worth no more than $1,500 through some of Australia's most stunning (and often rugged) landscapes, all in support of cancer research. It's not a race — it's a challenge and more importantly, a celebration of the power of community.
Yes, the cars break down, and yes, there are plenty of unexpected twists along the way, but that's all part of the fun.
The rally is designed to be a colourful and unpredictable experience, where teams travel in small groups, helping each other along the way.
And when the day's drive ends, we gather around the campfire, share stories, and reflect on the day's achievements.
This event brings together people who have been impacted by cancer in different ways — whether it's through their own battles or through loved ones. Together we'll make memories that last a lifetime while supporting the fight against cancer.
